“The Artificial Intelligence & Technology Office (AITO), which was established to serve as the Department of Energy’s (DOE) accelerator and coordinator of AI efforts in scientific discovery and technology innovation across the DOE enterprise, is issuing a Request for Information (RFI) on AI Technologies that will Drive American AI Leadership. The Executive Order on Maintaining American Leadership in AI clearly directs “The United States must drive technological breakthroughs in AI across the Federal Government, industry, and academia in order to promote scientific discovery, economic competitiveness and national security.”1 To maintain American leadership in AI, it is not enough to simply develop and adopt AI across DOE’s missions, it is imperative that DOE push the frontiers of AI
technologies, creating the next generation architectures, infrastructure, tools and approaches. AITO is exploring ideas to help define future Grand Challenges that will ensure US leadership in AI, with responses sought from academia, industry and national laboratories.”
“AI technology spans topic areas including data, hardware, software, and platforms from the smallest sensors to the world’s most powerful supercomputers. For the purpose of this RFI, Artificial Intelligence technology landscape includes, but is not limited to:
AI Methods
- Novel Algorithm Development
- Knowledge Based Systems based on Higher Order Logic
- Natural Language Processing
- Computer Vision
- Generative and Adversarial AI
Platforms, Infrastructure and Ecosystems
- Edge-computing
- Devices & Sensors
- High Performance Computing
- Novel computing paradigms
- Next generation networking
Autonomous Systems and Robotics
- Distributed intelligence (e.g., swarms)
- Nested or hierarchical intelligence
- Robust decision making (“fail safely”)
Potential Breakthrough AI Technology Areas: Efforts across government have worked to identify strategic AI research, development, and technology advancements to address sector-specific AI challenges and to advance American leadership in AI. The RFI is expected to focus on advancing novel AI technology breakthroughs to push the frontiers of development that include: …”
